John knew very well the physical person, Jesus, who was also God in the flesh. The remaining portions of the Gospel of John record incidents closely related to the closing days of Jesus' earthly ministry. Scholars see the signs as being connected to particular and significant 'sayings' of Jesus — Christological statements that he makes about himself — that are themselves contained in and explained by 'discourses' with other characters in the gospel. By believing these things, a person obtains eternal life For example, the story of Jesus' turning water into wine is interpreted to mean the contrast between the old and the new dispensations.
As John interprets the story, its deeper meaning is disclosed in a statement that Jesus makes: "I am the resurrection and the life. Beyond this, the emphasis on the individual's relationship with Jesus in the Gospel has suggested its usefulness for contemplation on the life of Christ. These are helpful keys to appreciating and understanding the living Christ in His ministry to us today. Some scholars on the weaker-sacramental side of the spectrum deny that there are any sacramental allusions in these passages or in the gospel as a whole, while others see sacramental symbolism applied to other subjects in these and other passages.

John's gospel is very different from the other three, written by Matthew, Mark and Luke. However, there is now more to the idea of life as contrasted to death.
